The principle and characteristics of gene-augmentation technology were introduced,and a comprehensive review was made on the research and application of this technology in the remediation of polluted soils and various wastewater treatment systems including conventional activated sludge systems and biofilm reactors.

The surviving status of the functional gene element in the gene-augmented system and effects of gene-augmentation on microbial community structure were also investigated.
