由电磁接触器和过载保护元件等组合而成的一种起动器。又称磁力起动器。由于它是直接把电网电压加到电动机的定子绕组上,使电动机在全电压下起动,所以又称直接起动器。当电网和负载对起动特性均没有特殊要求时,常采用电磁起动器。因其不仅操作控制方便,而且具有过载和失压保护功能。过载保护指当电动机的负荷超过其额定负荷、并且超过一定的容许时间时,电磁起动器能够自动分断电动机电源。失压保护指电磁起动器接通电源,将电动机起动并投入正常运行后,遇到电源断电时,电磁起动器能够自动分断电路,以防止电源重新有电时电动机自行起动,从而免除设备受到损害和人员受到伤害。电磁起动器分为不可逆和可逆的两种。前者用于起动无需反转的感应电动机;后者用于需要反转的感应电动机。电磁起动器用按钮操作。不可逆电磁起动器有"起动"和"停止"两个按钮;可逆电磁起动器有"正转"、"反转"和"停止"3个按钮。 为防止可逆起动器中的正常控制接触器和反转控制接触器同时通电,以致发生电源短路,在控制电路中一般设有电气联锁,有时还要增设机械联锁,以保证只有当起动器中的一个接触器处于断开位置时,另一个接触器才有可能通电动作,而电动机也只向一个方向运转。
