配置技巧注重视觉上的平衡，最简单的元素是体量较大的植株比体量小的植株看起来视觉冲击力强。而且具有色彩鲜艳的叶片、奇特的形状或强烈的质感的植株，都会有较大的眼球吸引力，尽管它们的体量无须太大。
对称式布局
两株下垂的薜荔在南洋杉两侧，形成理想的对称式布局。若垂直线经过组合体的中间，两旁的植株互相映衬。
不对称式布局
因南洋杉比薜荔视觉体量上要大得多，需要两盆薜荔与之匹配。空间也可以用来作为配置的平衡。两株薜荔放在一起比单独分开置放体量和效果要突显得多。
植株与饰物间的平衡
两株茂盛的观赏风梨置于桌几上瓮的两边。为使这个组合显示统一性和烘托平衡性，等距放两个烟缸在瓮的两边。这个组合的成功点还在于将红花和瓮的绿色与背景的色彩形成呼应。
规则式平衡与对称式
完美的对称式配置，要选择具有规则式形状和外观的室内植物，如香桃木。
两株香桃木(爱神木)分放在镜子两边。月桂与橘树亦置于合宜的地方。桌上有一简洁的插花：安祖花与荷威棕叶。
