      城市垃圾经过压缩处理可以减小体积,便于运输和填埋,或者成为高密度的惰性填埋材料和建筑材料。这是处理城市垃圾的一种新方法。
  
  美国1970年开始采用压缩方法处置城市垃圾。压缩机械有多种型号:小型的家用压缩机可装在家庭厨柜下面;大型的可以压缩整辆旧汽车,每日可以压缩、打捆成千吨垃圾。压缩机可将垃圾压缩到适合于起重、运输和最后处理所需要的程度。生活垃圾,一般压缩到相当于水比重的一半。用来填海的垃圾压缩到超过水的比重。在日本,垃圾压缩机已被广泛应用,往往将垃圾压缩成0.5米3的块状。压缩后的垃圾或者装袋,或者打捆。报纸、包装纸、罐头壳等,打捆比装袋经济。
  
  近年日本用高压压缩技术来处理城市垃圾。此法将垃圾压缩三次,最后一次压力为258千克力/厘米2,制成垃圾块,用铁丝网包成捆,表面涂上沥青以防碎裂和渗漏。垃圾捆的密度为1125.4~1380千克/米3,较一般压缩法高一倍。垃圾在高压压缩过程中,由于挤压和升温,可使生活垃圾中的BOD(生化需氧量)从6000毫克/升降到200毫克/升,COD(化学需氧量)从8000毫克/升降到150毫克/升,大大降低了腐化性,不再孳生昆虫,从而可减轻对环境的污染。对垃圾捆进行切片检验,在显微镜下显示出一种均匀的类似塑料的实体结构。在东京湾暴露3年后进行检验,没有发现任何递降分解痕迹。它成为一种惰性材料。用垃圾捆作为地基、填海造地材料,上面仅覆很薄的土层,不必作其他处理或等待许多年的沉降,即可利用。
