茄尼醇学名为：3，7，11，15，19，23，27，31，35－九甲基－三十六烷－2，6，10，14，18，22，26，30，34-九烯－l－醇。 白色或微黄色结晶粉末，熔点33～42.5℃，溶于乙醚、丙酮、烃类等有机溶剂，不溶于水，无光学活性，茄尼醇是植物中普遍存在于叶子中的成分之一，烟叶、马铃薯叶和桑叶中含量突出，尤其是烟叶中茄尼醇高达0.3―3% 。天然产物为全反式异构体。它是辅酶Q10（治疗心脏病和保健药）和维生素K2的侧链。它本身具有抗菌、消炎和止血作用，同时也是合成维生素K2和辅酶Q10的主要原料。茄尼醇也是泛醌的中间体。目前世界许多发达国家已生产和应用的辅酶Q10 ，依赖高纯度的茄尼醇作为原料。
