用于研究彗星的空间探测器。探测彗星的本质及其组成成分可以了解太阳风的物理性质和化学成分。彗星探测器上装有摄像机、中子分析仪、离子质量分析仪、等离子体观测仪和测光仪等探测设备，用以探测彗尾中的等离子体密度、温度和重离子特性等。彗星探测器装有变轨发动机，用以改变探测器的轨道，以便拦截彗尾，达到直接探测彗尾的目的。美国的"国际日地探险者"3号（见"国际日地探险者"卫星）将分别在 1985年和1986年探测贾可比尼彗星和哈雷彗星。苏联的"金星-哈雷彗星"号探测器、欧洲空间局的"吉奥多"号探测器和日本的"行星"A号探测器都是彗星探测器,按设计分别在距哈雷彗星10000公里、3000公里，甚至200公里处掠过。
