用介词将描述文献主题的短词分为几节，由计算机将其自动转换成索引款目而编制的主题索引。它是1968年英国M.F.林奇和J.E.阿米塔基在主词索引的基础上研制出来的。其编制步骤为:①通过分析文献主题,编写出一条类似文献题名的描述短语。②对由若干主题词和介词组成的描述短语进行加工处理,然后输入计算机。③计算机将描述短语中的名词抽出,用作索引标目,再将其他部分编排成限定标目含义的说明语, 并完成轮排、 排序、打印等项工作。例如,一篇关于"加拿大图书馆学院的计算机程序教学法"(Methods of instruction teachingof computers in Library Schools in Canada)的论文，文献编号为2000，按照转换生成规则，可以自动编成下列 4条索引款目：
