概述

该车的研制可追溯到1965年，那时克莱斯勒(chrysler)公司得到一项与联邦德国的福恩(faun)和克虏伯(krupp)公司联合研制制可运载当时由美国和联邦德国研制的mbt-70坦克的重型设备运输车的合同。最初装有联邦德国提供的底盘和驾驶室的2辆美国样车由克莱斯勒公司于1966年完成，第二年他们试验联邦德国的样车。mbt-70计划于1970年撤消。尔后美国制造了另外3辆作补充试验用的样车，称作xm-746，标准化后为m-746。美国陆军与沃德·拉弗朗斯公司签订了生产合同，第一批车辆于1975年交货，全部生产持续到1977年。

该车用来与联合柴油机电气公司(condec corporation)制造的m747半拖车相配合。

结构特点

该车拥有前控式的全封闭全钢驾驶室，为便于空运，整个高度可以降低。顶部的右边有1个圆形观察窗口；驾驶室后面装有2个太平洋汽车和铸造公司(pacific car and foundry)的p-60型液压绞盘，可使该车抢救不能行驶的车辆时无需附加辅助设备。

动力转向装置操纵前4轮，通过5速动力换档传动装置将动力传递到所有的4个桥。后桥上无任何旋转差速器。制动器通过1个防故障和防滑制动系统自动调节。
