船舶修理保险是保险人承保船舶在修理或改造作业期间，因保险事故造成损失或责任的保险。从广义上说，是海上船舶保险的一种，国际保险市场上称为船舶修理人风险保险。船舶修理保险具有的特点具体表现在：（1）船舶修理保险的被保险人可以是船舶所有人，也可以是船舶修理人。（2）船舶修理保险合同，可以是独立的保险单，也可以在船舶保险单中以加保船舶修理条款的形式出现。（3）该保险不仅承保船舶修理期间的海上和陆上危险，而且，承保船舶修理人基于其过失依法律或合同应向第三人承担的赔偿责任。（4）该保险的其保险价值不应低于该船舶修理之前的市场价值与修理费估算额之和。因为，被保险人若因为船舶在修理期间的危险性较航行中为低，而故意将保险价值压低，必然使保险人收益减小。当然，基于船舶修理的风险性低于航行，该保险收取的保险费较低。（5）由于被保险船舶的价值会随修理工作的进行而增加，因此，保险人在发生保险事故造成损失时，是按保险事故发生时已经修理的程度所需的修理费数额，加上该船舶在着手修理之前的市场价值之和作为计算赔偿数额的根据。（6）船舶修理保险的适用，一般是在购买成船后即予以修理或改装，或者是在所投保的船舶保险合同即将届满之时修理该船舶。不过，其条件是在投保的船舶保险期间内，被保险船舶未发生全损。如果是在定期船舶保险合同期间，船舶进坞维修的，船舶所有人不需另行投保船舶修理保险。
