明宋应星《天工开物》·锤锻篇记载的制针工艺，反映了中国古代拉丝和渗碳热处理技术。其工序是：将熟铁锻成细条，经穿孔铁模具拉拔成丝，剪断，"鎈"削，穿眼成为针形。然后放在铁锅内缓慢翻炒使之退火，再用松木、火矢(木炭)、豆豉做渗碳剂，拌以细泥，将针覆盖加热。在覆盖层外，插上几枚针，用以测知火候。当测针经加热氧化，手捻即碎时，就可以启封，将针在水中淬硬，得到成品（见图）。
据调查，中国赫哲族在近代仍用类似方法制作鱼钩。其步骤是：先将铁丝弯制加工成钩，和木炭、火硝一同装入陶罐加热，趁热打碎陶罐，使钩落入水中淬硬。再在铁锅中用油和小米翻炒，使之退火。这样做成的鱼钩具有很好的强度和韧性，可以钓起百斤重的大鱼。
