白足澳洲林鼠体长1.65～2米，尾长1.8～2.15米。它的皮毛紧密而柔软，头和背部呈深褐色。有些个体的头和背部呈暗锈红色，其他部位呈浅灰色或沙黄色。白足澳洲林鼠的尾巴非常奇特，上半部分呈黑褐色，下半部分分为白色。白足澳洲林鼠的耳朵较大，后足相对较长，雌性有4个乳头。除此以外，人类对白足澳洲林鼠的生活习性一无所知。值得庆幸的是，澳洲林鼠属一共有两种，我们可以通过和白足澳洲林鼠同属的狐尾澳洲林鼠的生活习性来猜测它们可能也是夜行性动物，喜欢利用树洞筑窝，一年四季能连续繁殖，妊娠期34天左右，幼仔20天后就能独立活动。如此而已。
白足澳洲林鼠大约是在20世纪初灭绝的。由于人类天性不喜欢鼠类，因此对于白足澳洲林鼠的具体灭绝时间和原因十分迷茫。
