工程结构设计方法中用以反映结构安全程度的系数。安全系数的确定需要考虑荷载、材料的力学性能、试验值和设计值与实际值的差别、计算模式和施工质量等各种不定性。还须涉及工程的经济效益及结构破坏可能产生的后果，如生命财产和社会影响等诸因素。它与国家的技术水平和经济政策密切相关。
容许应力设计法的安全系数是由规定的材料弹性极限（或极限强度、流限）与容许应力之比。
破坏强度设计法中的安全系数则是计算的破坏荷载与规定的标准荷载之比。
在半概率极限状态设计法（见极限状态设计法）中的安全系数分别用荷载系数和材料强度系数、工作条件系数表达。在概率极限状态设计法中，设计式中所列的荷载分项系数、抗力分项系数、荷载组合值系数等，是按失效概率计算值确定的，它们与其他设计方法中凭工程经验确定的安全系数有区别。
