“西北风”导弹全套武器系统由导弹、发射装置、瞄准装置、敌我识别器、红外夜视仪等组成。导弹直径 90毫米, 长1.8 米,平时装在包装筒兼发射简里,重约20千克。它采用被动式红外线制导方式,导弹的导引头里装有4个灵敏度非常高的红外线探测器,不但能探测到普通飞机发动机的尾焰,而且可以跟踪热燃气体发出的红外线信号。弹上装有微型处理机,可以对红外线信号和背景辐射进行快速处理,自动排除干扰信号,准确地迎击6000米范围内的各种飞机。弹上装有激光引信。可以在最族距离上引爆战斗部,用大量破片摧毁目标。该武器可由 2名士兵携带和操作,也可装在吉普车或轻型装甲车上使用,还可供小型舰艇或直升机使用
