项目说明：美国海军于1922年将一艘运煤船改装为试验航母，目的是进行作为飞机的操作试验，发展和评价的平台。
设计：改装的范围非常有限，桅杆被割除，改装为支撑飞行甲板的柱子。从舰首到舰尾安排了13个单柱绗架，上面铺设长165.3米，宽19.8米的全通飞行甲板，中心设一台飞机升降机。机库设在尾部，原来的6个煤舱中的4个改为飞机库，其余的用作航空汽油库，弹药库和升降机械室。最初的舰桥上层建筑保留，机库甲板完全敞开。 它是美国历史上第一艘航母。
改装：原设计为单烟囱，在完工后不久即增加了第二个烟囱。

由mare岛海军船厂建造，最初是运煤船-"木星"号。1911年10月18日开工。1912年8月24日下水，1913年4月7日完工。从1920年3月24日到1922年3月20日在偌福克海军船厂改装为试验航母（av 1）。1920年4月11日命名为"兰利"号，1922年3月20日重新服役。1936年其航母任务被新的航母"黄蜂"号取代。1936年10月25日到1937年2月26日在mare岛海军船厂被改装为水上飞机母舰（av 3）。1937年4月21日重新服役。在二战早期作为飞机运输舰使用。1942年2月27日在爪洼附近遭到日本轰炸机攻击，命中数枚炸弹失去动力，被美国驱逐舰击沉。
