性质:鞣料和鞣剂两者都是具在鞣革性能的物料。鞣料带有天然产物的原始性状,而鞣剂则是经过深加工的产品。例如鲨鱼油和鳕鱼油可直接用作鞣革的油鞣料。又如植物鞣料像荆树皮、橡碗等过去曾直接用来鞣革,后因运输、保管、使用不便,乃取其水浸提液,经蒸发、浓缩、干燥等加工成块状或粉状的制剂,成为植物鞣剂(俗称栲胶)。运输、保管、使用方便。现代制革生产主要使用鞣剂。鞣剂分矿物鞣剂和有机鞣剂两大类。前者有铬鞣剂、铝鞣剂、锆鞣剂及多金属络合鞣剂等。后者包括植物鞣剂和合成鞣剂。合成鞣剂品种繁多,有芳香族(酚醛、萘醛、木质磺酸等鞣剂);脂肪族(树脂鞣剂、戊二醛、烷基磺酰氯油鞣剂法);杂环化合物(如噁唑烷鞣剂、糠醛鞣剂)。应用最多的是铬鞣剂和植物鞣剂;其他各类鞣剂除少数用于主鞣(如烷基磺酰氯油鞣剂)外,大都用于预鞣、复鞣或结合鞣法中。
