无色透明斜方晶系晶体。熔点为42．35℃。密度1．874g／cm3。(26℃)。富潮解性，能溶于水和乙醇。具有酸的通性，能与碱、碱氧化物、无机盐反应。其酸性较硫酸、盐酸、硝酸为弱，但较醋酸、硼酸等弱酸为强。无氧化能力。市售磷酸浓度为85％，无色透明，粘稠、无臭味，密度1．7g／cm3。加热到200℃失去水分而成焦磷酸，加热到300℃失去一分子水生成偏磷酸。对皮肤有腐蚀性。
应用领域 无机工业用于生产酸式磷酸锰、焦磷酸钾及各种磷酸盐类。医药工业用于制造甘油、磷酸钠、神经系统药剂(磷酸铁)、牙料粘合剂(磷酸锌)及青霉素的PH调节剂等。塑料工业用于生产酚醛树脂的缩合反应催化剂。日化工业用作生产洗涤剂的助剂，用于浸渍火柴梗，使火柴使用较为安全。冶金工业用于生产磷酸耐火泥，可提高炼钢炉寿命等。食品工业用作酸性调味剂。涂料工业用作金属防锈漆。
