生产中，不同的生产机械要求不同的运行速度，甚至同一个生产机械在不同的生产过程时需要不同的运行速度。例如，轧钢机在轧制不同钢种或不同规格钢材时，以不同的速度轧制；一台普通车床主轴的工作速度，必须根据粗加工还是精加工，根据被加工材料的性质和刀具的硬度等多种因素来选定。这都需要通过对拖动系统的运行速度调节予以实现。
根据拖动电动机不同，有直流电力拖动调速技术和交流电力拖动调速技术两种。为提高拖动系统调速性能，可采用电力拖动反馈控制技术和数字控制调速技术。
