美国科学家。1706年1月17日生于北美波士顿,1790年4月 17日卒于费城。1731年在费城建立北美第一个公共图书馆，1751年协助创办宾夕法尼亚大学。富兰克林的主要研究领域为物理学（包括热传导测量、蒸发过程中液体冷却现象、声音在水和空气中的传播）和电学。1747～1753年间对电学进行研究，并解释了莱顿瓶的原理,首次用＋（正）、－（负）符号表示充电状态。1752年 6月进行著名的风筝试验，证明闪电是大气中的放电现象，他发明了避雷针。此外，富兰克林还研究过墨西哥湾流等自然现象，完成许多技术发明。他被选为一些国家的科学院院士，被哈佛大学、耶鲁大学等授予荣誉学位，获英国皇家学会开普勒金质奖章。
