个体较大，一般体长25～30厘米、体重300克左右。体光滑无刺，体表斑纹随鱼体生长而变化，个体小时作背密布褐色小点，随个体长大斑点渐消失而呈一致紫褐色。腹面乳白色。胸鳍后上方及背鳍基部各有深褐色的大圆斑。
