1964年吉福德和朗斯沃思同时提出脉管制冷循环,其原理是利用高压气体被绝热抽空而达到制冷的目的。脉管一端封闭,另一端接着蓄冷器和冷端换热器——制冷器,当高压气体进入脉管时,呈现层流状。这样在充气时,由于压缩而在脉管中形成温度梯度,封闭端的温度最高,压缩热被冷却水带走。这样在脉管中高压气体被抽空时,在管的出口端形成低温制冷区。
