该级舰从1976年至1985年共建了14艘,分为三代.满载排水量4775吨(第三代)航速30节以上,主要装备有防空导弹、鱼雷、火炮等,用于防空、防潜作战。该给舰中的“谢菲尔德”号和“考文垂”号在1982年马岛海战中被阿根廷飞机击沉。
