直升机在海上石油钻井平台、采油平台、后勤供应船平台与陆地间的运输飞行。其主要任务是运送上下班的职工、运输器材设备和担负其他后勤支援工作。直升机海上油田服务是自70年代以来随着近海油田的开发而迅速发展起来的飞行业务。例如，英国的北海油田平均每天大约有1500架次的飞行。海上石油钻井一般离岸较远，孤立分散，采用船舶沟通钻井与陆地的联系速度慢，而且安全和舒适程度也比较差。直升机能在狭小的场地上起降，机动灵活，遂成为海上油田服务的理想交通运输工具。由于海上气候多变，导航设备少，钻井平台能提供的着陆面积狭小，且四周又有障碍物，直升机应有较好的操纵性和机动性。机上应安装浮筒，携带供应急使用的救生衣、救生艇、海水淡化剂、药品、驱鲨剂、应急电台和其他救援设备。
