hk4式双动袖珍手枪是一种自动装填、联动击发的袖珍手枪，经过简单互换部分零件后，可以从发射中心发火弹改为发射边缘发火弹。数字“4”是表示该枪有4种口径。
hk4式手枪为枪机自由后坐式武器，击发后火药气体推弹壳向后，套筒随之后坐，在套筒后坐过程中，完成抽壳、抛壳，压倒击锤等一系列动作。套筒撞击到后边的缓冲垫后停止后坐，随之在复进簧作用下复进，推弹入膛。只有当套筒完全复进到位时扣扳机才能击发。
hk4式手枪保险机柄位于套筒左侧，上推露出红点为发射状态，下推露出白点为保险状态。保险时，击锤被阻止住。该枪一般使用中心发火弹，当改为发射边缘发火弹时，可以调整弹底窝平面板 ，以改变击针的轴向。
