机器（或设备）的密封部位在端面的一种接触式动密封（见图），又称端面密封。机械密封在旋转轴的密封中应用最广。密封的静环通常固定在壳体上，动环通过弹簧、弹簧座与轴一同旋转。静环与壳体、动环与轴形成的间隙用成型填料密封。在动环和静环接触的端面形成相对滑动面，即动密封面。为保证密封良好，动密封面应十分平直和光洁。弹簧力和被密封的流体压力使动环贴紧静环。因动环与轴通过弹簧连接，动环和静环间贴合性受轴的振动和摆动影响较小。静环一般常用润滑性好的软质材料如石墨、填充聚四氟乙烯等，动环多用硬质合金、陶瓷等材料制造。机械密封性能可靠,泄漏少,寿命长，功耗小，不需要经常维修。在结构上采取相应措施后，它可用于高温、高压、高真空、高速和腐蚀性工作介质的场合。
