1.古代经学家称广引事语﹑推演本义的书为"外传"，与专主解释经义的"内传"相对。如《春秋左传》为内传，《国语》为外传;《诗》有《韩诗外传》，《春秋》又有《谷梁外传》﹑《公羊外传》等。 2.传记文的一种。为史书所不载的人物立传;或于正史外另为作传，记其遗闻逸事，都叫外传。如《汉武外传》﹑《飞燕外传》等。
