正常行为(no「mal behavior)在研究异常行为时，首先应明确什么是正常行为，才能以此为标准，界定出异常行为。但对“正常”这个概念有多种理解和标准。通常从四方面来考虑，合在一起可说明正常行为的含义:(l)正常即健康，精神健康与身体健康都意味着不存在疾病。绝大多数人是精神健康的，但这并不是说正常人一定生活在最佳的状态之中。(2)王常即平均状态，这是统计学的概念。一个人的行为愈是接近平均数，就愈被认为是正常的。平均数的两端表示偏离正常的变异，即异常行为。(3)正常即理想状态，医师所拟定的理想状态接近于治疗目标。人本主义的心理学家罗杰斯(R ogers，c.)的治疗目标，是帮助来访者发展其潜在能力，达到充分的自我实现。实际上没有一个人能达到这种理想境界，都会受特定文化价值观的制约。(4)正常即适应过程，强调正常行为是一个不断发展的过程，它不是静止的，而是不断变化着的。正常人能学会应付各种应激的技巧，克服生活中的紧张情绪，并能不断增强适应能力。 (赵亚志撰刘协和审)
