在早期如果双胎中一个胎儿的动脉压大于另一个，动脉压低者接受另一胎儿的血。用过的动脉血又注入髂血管，故注入下身的血多于上身。结果造成许多已形成和正在形成的组织发育阻断，退化而致形态发生不全成为畸形。常失去的组织有头部、心脏、上肢、肺脏、胰脏、上部肠。阻断破坏重者只留下一些残余组织，如无定形双胎，有轻有重，几乎无一例相同。供血的胎儿心脏大，代偿失调，继发肝功能异常，低血色素贫血，水肿，有时如水泡样。
