| 周光关系 period-luminosity relation 造父变星的光变周期和光度之间的关系。20世纪初，美国女天文学家H.S.勒维特对小麦哲伦云中的25颗造父变星的研究发现，这些星的视星等几乎线性地随周期的对数的增加而减小。由于它们都在小麦哲伦云中，到太阳的距离近似相等，这实际上反映了绝对星等和周期对数之间的线性关系，后来被称为造父变星的周期光度关系，简称周光关系。由视星等和周期的关系转化为绝对星等和周期的关系，实际上是周光关系的零点问题或定标问题。1915年，美国天文学家H.沙普利率先解决了这个问题。几十年来，周光关系的零点不断改进，还发现周光关系也跟造父变星的颜色有关。利用周光关系，可根据造父变星的光变周期求得其绝对星等，通过与它的视星等的比较，可求得该造父变星或它所在的恒星系统的距离。这是测量星团和星系距离的主要方法之一，故造父变星有量天尺之美称。 |
