不需要争夺的冠军不需要争夺，就能稳拿冠军，你相信会有这样的便宜事吗?然而，奥运会历史上真的发生过一次这样的怪事。在1908年伦敦第4届奥运会400米决赛中，入围的4名运动员是英国的霍尔斯韦尔和3名美国人。起跑后，两名美国人并肩齐跑，故意阻挡霍尔斯韦尔。霍尔斯韦尔为了超过他们，只能从外道绕过他们，这时另一位美国人卡彭特又故意用胳膊肘撞击霍尔斯韦尔的胸部。当霍尔斯韦尔超过他们时，卡彭特又在后面拉他的短裤。美国运动员的举动引起在场观众的强烈不满，裁判员则当即取消了卡彭特的比赛资格，同时宣布比赛无效，重新开始。但另外两名美国运动员对此裁决十分不满，拒绝参赛以示抗议。这样，参加决赛的运动员就只剩下霍尔斯韦尔一个人，不用说，冠军自然非他莫属了。
