一般交易理论研究讨价还价式的%26#8220;面对面%26#8221;交易。埃奇沃思在1881年首次研究了这样的问题：如果经济系统中不仅仅是等价交换，而是任何类型的商品交易都可以做成的话，经济系统会出现什么后果？埃奇沃思提出了%26#8220;合同曲线%26#8221;的概念，并提出了一个猜想：当交易者的人数无限增加时，合同曲线收缩成竞争均衡集合；他还发明了刻画合同曲线的一个矩形图，当今称其为埃奇沃思盒。埃奇沃思的合同曲线在对策论中得到了深入推广，转变成为%26#8220;核(core)%26#8221;概念，后来%26#8220;核%26#8221;又返回到经济系统中，成为%26#8220;经济核%26#8221;。
希克斯1946年的著作《价值与资本》和萨缪尔森1947年的著作《经济分析基础》，全面总结和发展了边际分析阶段的研究工作，尤其是希克斯发展了时际均衡理论，萨缪尔森则把显示性偏好与均衡稳定性结合起来研究。这两部著作使边际分析到达了顶点，从而成为经济学史上的两部名著。
