haut couture是法语，是一个专用词汇，特指法国巴黎专为私人订制的手工精致服装。其款式以夜礼服为主。由高级女装设计师设计，选用优质面辅料和饰品，手工缝制且经过多次试穿。高级女装的价格昂贵，世界上仅极少数富有女性有能力购置（专门机构曾统计为约20o0人。相对于全球庞人的人口，这确乎是沧海一粟）。19世纪中叶，高级女装业由沃思（worth）在巴黎创立。要成为一名高级女装设计师必须由法国文化部确认，并每年在巴黎举办两次时装发布会，时间分别为1月和7月。高级女装常常代表时装的流行趋势。
世界上其他地方的时装业，也生产高级的女装，有时与巴黎高级女装十分相似，如纽约的high fashion，罗马的altamode。但是，如果他们爱慕haut couture这个称呼并借用来描述自己的产品，就难免僭越之讥。
中国的时装设计师受巴黎高级女装的影响至深至大。中国的服装市场与巴黎高级女装又风马牛不相及。从1997年到1998年，中国的设计师以及设计专业的学生费尽心机模仿从沃思到拉格瓦的作品，他们当中最幸运的少数甚至能够挥霍公司或股民的巨额资金推出一场两场"高级女装发布会"，但中国女性仍穿着牛仔t恤羊毛衫西装套裙，她们几乎没有机会穿夜礼服去赴宴，她们并不需要巴黎高级女装的中国版赝品。
