章攀桂,不详其人。乾隆间,服官在外,笃信净业,自号宝严居士。与投子沙门世惺,辑莲宗集要一书。自为序曰,净名云,随其心净,则佛土净。华严云,应观法界性,一切唯心造。皆唯心净土之旨也。乐邦苦域,金宝泥沙。垢净心生,粗妙境现。此理唯禅净双修者,可以默契。初机浅学,何由得其门哉。永明料拣云,但得见弥陀,何愁不开悟。而云栖谓,持名一法,彻上彻下,大小兼收。所以修净土者,当以持名为正课,以修一切善法为助因。正助既分,而后修行之路,皎然不惑。莲池大师疏弥陀经,以信愿行,判为一经资粮。而以一心不乱,专持名号为宗旨,洵确论与。余素慕佛乘,注心西极。虽宦游几三十年,夷险备历。而十念定课,未尝一日忘也。己酉春,与投子憨公游浮山,至华严寺,偶于案头见龙舒净土文,理明词达,诚为净土津梁。但篇帙稍繁,读者或不终卷而废。乃与憨公,遍取净土诸篇,细心商榷,重加编集。冗者节之,缺者补之,分门别类,略如蘧庵之净土指归。而大旨一主阿弥陀经,以持名为宗旨。故开卷即以此经冠首,俾行人知先守约。二六时中,专持名号,以为正行。而以深信发愿,为往生前茅。信愿行三者相须,净业乃成。盖净土为佛门之异方便,而持名又异方便中之方便也。书凡六卷,帙虽半于龙舒,义实该乎莲藏。爰付剞劂,质之四方净侣,倘以为不背教理,不越净规,愚者暂得心开,智士益增净行,斯愿足矣。若夫唯心净土,则在当人默契,固无须门外汉之饶舌也。后莫知其所终。(莲宗集要)
论曰,向来载宰官往生,不下数十人,然皆古记所传,而近代者无闻。余广采博访,寥寥然仅得二人焉,何夙因之易昧若斯也。呜呼,豪贵学道,自古为难。况当像季,不更宜然。今者,一则居尊贵,而不恋世荣。一则历夷险,而不废定课。有志净业者,当以二人为轨则。所谓案牍虽忙姑少置,朝朝十念不宜亏,不觉深味乎其言哉。
