第一次世界大战以后，法国在美国电影的冲击下变得日薄西山。路易.德吕克想利用“纯艺术”来复兴法国电影。他于是通过他主办的《电影》杂志在理论上提出“上镜头性”等概念，企图使“法国电影成为真正的电影，真正的法国电影”。同时，他在创作中团结一批有作为的电影艺术家，力求在影片中进行他的革新目标。这一学派被称为“印象派”，是法国电影史学家亨利.朗格卢瓦倡导的。印象派电影的代表作品有冈斯的《拿破伦传》、《车轮》；莱皮埃的《黄金国》、《无情的女人》；杜拉克的《西班牙的节日》；德吕克的《流浪女》、《狂热》；让.爱浦斯坦的《红色的旅店》、《忠实的心》等。但由于印象派抛弃了人物而过分追求造型，越来越脱离观众，不为广大观众所接受。但由于这样，反而使法国的一些电影后来者，通过先前印象派的曲折和挫折，找到了一条使法国电影走向复兴之路。
