原是欧洲16～17世纪一种乡村题材的戏剧表演，歌剧的前身之一。近代音乐中的田园曲是模仿牧人所吹肖姆管曲调和圣诞吹奏乐的器乐曲或声乐曲，源于意大利。常用慇或屼拍子，有模仿风袋管的持续低音，近似意大利的西西里舞曲。G.F.亨德尔的清唱剧《弥赛亚》第 1部分的《田园交响曲》和H.柏辽兹的交响曲《哈罗尔德在意大利》第3乐章,都取材于意大利阿布鲁齐山区风袋管吹奏者的音乐，为典型的田园曲。J.S.巴赫《圣诞清唱剧》第4部分的《田园交响曲》、L.van贝多芬《第六交响曲》（《田园》）的末乐章和R.瓦格纳的歌剧《特里斯丹和绮瑟》第3幕第1场的牧歌，也都是同样性质的音乐。
