及时性是由会计信息的时效性决定的。任何信息的价值都有其时间性，且在某种程序上信息越及时其价值越高。过时的信息只能作为历史资料，对决策毫无用处。所以，及时性原则是相关性的重要保证，没有及时性也就谈不上相关性。相关的信息如不及时，也就不相关，没有；及时的信息如不相关，亦然无用。
实践中要在及时性和可靠性之间作出权衡。为得到时效性极强的会计信息，可能要放弃一些精确性和可靠性。前者将大大增强会计信息的有用性；后者则又会降低会计信息的有用性，只要前者有用性的增加幅度大于后者有用性的减少幅度，这种及时性就是必要的，即关键是如何最佳满足会计信息使用者的经济决策需要。
