（773～819），字子厚，河东（今山西永济）人，世称柳河东。贞元年间进士及第，复中博学弘辞，授集贤院正字。调蓝田尉，迁监察御史里行。顺宗即位，任礼部员外郎，参预政治革新。不久宪宗继位，废新政，打击革新派，被贬为永州司马，十年后召还长安，复出为柳州刺史。病逝于柳州。他与韩愈发起古文运动，为一代古文大家，世称“韩柳”。其诗常于自然景物之中寄托幽思，纤秾而归于淡泊，简古而含有深味，自成一格。
