经济学(Economy，Economics)一词，可以追溯到古希腊的亚里斯多德(Aristotle, 公元前384--322年，古希腊哲学家)时代。希腊文中Economy一词为Oikonomia，由词源Oikos(房子，家产)和nomos(规律，管理)组成，其意义是说%26#8220;家务管理科学%26#8221;。到了十七世纪，法国经济学家蒙克莱斯钦(Antoine de Montchrestien，1575--1621)提出了%26#8220;政治经济学(Political Economy)%26#8221;一词。而希腊文中Political一词为Politicos，意指社会，于是%26#8220;家务管理%26#8221;的经济学上升为%26#8220;社会财富管理%26#8221;的政治经济学。十九世纪末以前，德国人用%26#8220;国民经济学(Nationalokonomie, National Economy)%26#8221;作为政治经济学的同义词，而经济学一词多半停留在较窄的意义上。直到1890年，英国经济学家马歇尔(Alfred Marshall,1842--1924)的《经济学原理》一书出版以后，许多学者才使用马歇尔的说法，用%26#8220;经济学(Economics)%26#8221;一词代替了%26#8220;政治经济学%26#8221;。但在马克思主义的经济学文献中，%26#8220;政治经济学%26#8221;一词一直延用至今。
