山西省图书馆的前身是1919年10月9日成立的“山西教育图书博物馆”，其后先后使用过“山西公立图书馆（附设博物馆）”、“山西省立民众教育馆”、“太原博物馆”等名称。1950年改名为“山西省图书博物馆”，1953年8月又改为“山西省博物馆（设图书部）”，1957年3月成立了“山西省图书馆筹备处”，与博物馆分离。1960年8月28日，山西省图书馆新馆落成，正式开馆。1984年又建设东阅览楼一座。
省馆现在占地36000平方米，馆舍建筑面积近3万平方米。收藏书刊文献资料220万余件，涉及中外文图书、报刊、古籍线装书、唱片、录音录像磁带、cd、vcd 、dvd、电影胶片、缩微资料及大型计算机数据库、cd-rom等各种载体；此外，还有金石拓片、字画、舆图和手稿、地契、账簿、票证等特种文献。古籍善本中有唐人写经、北宋刻《福州藏》、北宋雍熙三年绛州刻本《佛说北斗七星经》、北宋元丰七年刻本《大方广华严经合论第四十一》等孤本、珍本。
