2002年中国工业增加值45935亿元，比上年增长10.2%，占GDP的比重为44.85%。其中，规模以上工业企业（即国有工业企业及年产品销售收入500万元以上的非国有工业企业）增加值31482亿元，增长12.6%。这其中国有及国有控股企业增加值16638亿元，比上年增长11.7%；股份制企业增加值11570亿元，增长14.4%；外商及港澳台投资企业增加值8091亿元，增长13.3%。外商投资企业工业产值占全国工业总产值的比重为33.37%。在工业增加值中，轻工业增加值12294 亿元，增长12.1%，重工业增加值19188亿元，增长 13.1 %。 2002年产品结构调整取得新进展。出口导向型产品、高技术产品、适应消费结构升级的消费产品产量快速增长。全年工业新产品产值比上年增长24%。微型电子计算机、移动电话机、半导体集成电路、彩色电视机等电子通信产品产量比上年增长25.9%以上；纱、布、丝织品、服装增长8.5%至19.9%；汽车增长38.8%，其中轿车增长55.2%；钢和钢材分别增长19.7%和19.6%。 2002年工业企业实现利润5620亿元，按可比口径计算，比上年增长20.6%，其中国有及国有控股企业实现利润2636亿元，增长15.3%。 在制造业外商投资方面，2002年外商直接投资项目数为24930个，占全部项目数的72.96%，合同利用外资金额592.70亿美元，占全部合同利用外资金额的71.61%, 实际利用外资金额368.00亿美元，占全部实际利用外资金额的69.77%。 根据中国加入WTO的承诺，中国关税总水平将由现在的14%降到2005年的约10%，其中工业品将由13降至约9.3%。98%的工业品关税减让将到2005年结束，但汽车及汽车零部件的关税减让将到2006年7月1日分别降至25%和10%的水平（平均水平），部分化工产品的关税减让将到2008年结束。
