鉴于海啸破坏性之大，1964年国际上就成立了“全球海啸警报系统协作小组”，并在夏威夷设立了太平洋海啸预警中心，环太平洋地区有26个国家加入，以美国、日本的海啸预警系统最为发达，技术最为先进，信息传播最为迅速。一般说来，该中心从接到地震报告到做出预测，再到相关国家接到海啸警报，不超过5到15分钟。如本次海啸发生后仅15分钟，该中心就向联合参与预警系统的26国发布了预警信息。如果印度洋各岛国也有预警系统，也许人们就可以利用从震后到海啸袭击各岛国的宝贵的90分钟做好预防工作，那样可以大大减少人员的伤亡。但从目前的实际情况看，海啸预警只对躲避越洋海啸有作用，对本地海啸的预警还来不及，这也是本次印度洋海啸酿成惨祸的原因之一。
