隋唐时在镇戍驻防的兵士。唐朝在沿边及内地某些冲要之处设置镇戍,担负经常性的守卫警备巡逻任务。镇戍分上中下三等。每五百防人为上镇,三百人为中镇,三百人以下为下镇。每五十人为上戍，三十人为中戍，三十人以下为下戍。据《唐六典》记载，唐统治区域内共有上镇二十，中镇九十，下镇一百三十五;上戍十一,中戍八十六，下戍二百四十五，约需防人七八万。防人戍守，采用轮番制，皆十月一日交代。防人由什么人充当，史无明文。但镇戍防守为府兵任务之一，据此推测，在府兵制鼎盛时期，镇戍防人一般由府兵充当，不足则由兵募补充。随着府兵制的衰落,府兵兵额不足,防人多由兵募充当。唐玄宗统治时期还有由地方官征发百姓充当的防丁。他们的待遇和一般兵募不同。兵募出发时，常由官府给衣装，称为衣赐，防丁却没有，习惯上由亲邻资助；防丁出防千里之外的，给与"一丁充资"，即免除一人课役,由他人出钱物帮助防丁。西魏北周时期,地方官每年发民守防,隋开皇十年（590）下令"百姓年五十，输庸停防"，据此，玄宗时期出现的防丁可能是旧制的沿袭或恢复，在当时，应亦构成防人的一种。防人的任务是戍守，但据敦煌所出《水部式》，有时也被差遣担任其他劳役。
