源也很早。据古代文献记载，希伯来的领袖摩西曾制订法令，昭告民众;建立等级，委任管理人，实行分级管理，自己只管理最重要的政务。19世纪生于英国，移居美国的麦卡勒姆(D.Maeallum，x815一1878年)提出一套建立铁路管理制度的原则和方法，包括责任、检查、报告等，并且设计出一种企业组织结构图表，标明各类人员的权力和责任以及相互之间的关系。以后，普尔(H.V.Poor，1812一1905年)又提出运输管理的三条原则:即完善的组织、通讯联系和资料的系统保存和利用，为企业实行科学的组织管理打下了理论基础。 系统的企业管理理论，是从19世纪末到20世纪初才开始建立的。西方一般认为，以美国科学管理的创始人泰罗(F.W.Taylor，1856一1915年)189巨年发表的《计件工资制度》和1903年发表的《科学管理原理》为近代企业管理理论开始形成的标志。泰罗的管理理论通常称为“科学管理”。他的管理方法通常称为“泰罗制”。列宁在分析和评价这种制度的时候指出:“资本主义在这方面的最新发明—泰罗制—也同资本主义其他一切进步的东西一样，有两个方面:一方面是资产阶级剥削的最巧妙的残酷手段;另一方面是一系列的最丰富的科学成就。”这一观点符合马克思关于管理具有二重性的学说，同样适用于其他资本主义企业的管理制度和方法。与泰罗同时期的法国管理学家法约尔(H.Fayal，1841一1925年)和德国的社会学家韦伯(M.、V亡ber，1864一1920年)等人着重从企业的组织和管理职能等方面研究管理问题，提出一些管理理论和管理原则，通常称为“组织理论”。泰罗、韦伯等人的管理理论，通称为“古典学派管理理论”，基本上是从20世纪初到第二次世界大战前形成的。 在第二次世界大战以后，兴起了多种流派的管理理论，主要包括社会系统学派(认为企业是一个社会有机体，应把企业放在与其相关的诸系统中进行系统地考察和分析，借以改善企业管理)、决策理论学派(认为管理过程就是决策程序，改善决策即意味着改善管理)、社会一技术系统学派(强调社会系统与技术系统的相互协调)、条件理论学派(强调企业对环境的适应性)、信息中心学派(强调信息在管理中的重要作用，把计算机技术和信息处理技术应用于管理领域)、数理学派(重视管理决策的数学模型及其通过电子计算机的应用)，以及其他学派。目前，对于第二次世界大战后兴起的诸管理学派的理论，一般称为“现代管理理论”，以区别于“古典学派管理理论”。 发端于“霍桑实验”的“行为科学学派管理理论”，截然不同于泰罗的古典管理理论;与一般的现代管理理论的诸学派比较，也有其独特之处。
