本文以秋胡戏妻故事的发生地“桑间”与秋胡妻的采桑行为为切入点,结合中国古代文学中频繁出现的“桑林”意象与“采桑女”意象,分析秋胡戏妻故事形成的历史文化背景,指出从上古的桑林崇拜及桑中风俗到中古洁妇模式,中国古代桑林意象从原始的生殖崇拜逐渐演变为实在的人间礼俗,而劳作其间象征人类相诱相亲最初渴望的采桑女也逐渐演变成为断然拒绝无行男子纠缠的洁妇,秋胡妻形象就是这批洁妇的最早一个版本。
