又称私人藏书目录。中国宋以前私家藏书目录仅有隋代许善心的《七林》和唐代吴竞的《西斋书目》、蒋彧的《新集目录》等。宋以后由于雕版印刷普及，私家藏书日渐增多，私家藏书目录随之兴起，逐渐形成超越官府藏书目录之势，成为中国古典目录中的大宗。宋代晁公武的《郡斋读书志》和陈振孙的《直斋书录解题》体例完备，有小序与解题，最为后人所推重。私家藏书目录对图书的分类不尽采用四分法，细类划分比较灵活，如清代孙星衍的《孙氏祠堂书目》分12大类，徐乾学的《传是楼书目》史部分37细类。某些私家藏书目录收录范围较广，如明代晁瑮的《晁氏宝文堂书目》收录戏曲小说，明末清初钱谦益的《绛云楼书目》收录天主教图书。私家藏书目录有不少是专门的书目,如宋尤袤的《遂初堂书目》为版本目录；清代钱曾的《读书敏求记》为善本书目。私家藏书目录既可反映某一时代文化学术的发展水平,也可为研究著名藏书家和学者提供资料,还可作为编制当时的国家目录的重要依据。
