      霜霉目中进化程度最高的 1科。全部是维管束植物的专性寄生菌。菌丝体发达,生于寄主细胞间,以球形或线形吸器伸入寄主细胞吸取养科。孢囊梗由内生菌丝发生,从寄主气孔伸出,与菌丝的区别很明显,常具有特征性的各种分枝,是分属的主要依据。孢子囊单生于孢囊梗分枝的顶端,同时成熟,成熟后脱落,借风传播。萌发时产生肾形的、带有侧生双鞭毛的游动孢子或芽管。有性器官生于寄主细胞间,藏卵器仅含1个卵球,经雄器授精后发育成卵孢子。
  
  霜霉菌过去不能进行人工培养,所以称为绝对寄生菌。现在能够进行组织培养的有寄生霜霉、葎草假霜霉和葡萄单轴霉等。芸薹霜霉和禾生指梗霉已能在实验室用人工培养基培养。
  
  本科有许多种是栽培植物的重要病原菌,所致病害通称霜霉病。如禾生指梗霉引起谷子白发病,甘蔗霜指霉引起甘蔗霜霉病,葡萄单轴霉引起葡萄霜霉病,古巴假霜霉引起黄瓜霜霉病(跑马干),寄生霜霉危害多种十字花科植物,莴苣盘梗霉引起莴臣霜霉病(火风病)等。在适宜的环境条件下,某些霜霉病极为猖獗,给生产带来巨大损失,例如19世纪下半叶,由于葡萄霜霉的流行,法国的葡萄酒酿造业曾处于瘫痪状态。
  
  根据孢囊梗形态(特别是分枝)的特征、孢子囊的形态和萌发方式、卵孢子的形态及其与藏卵器的关系等,本科下分8属(见图),主要鉴别特征见表。
  
  圆梗霉属全球有2种,中国仅发现1种;指梗霉属约16种,中国已报道6种,均寄生于禾本科植物;霜指霉属约9种,中国仅有1种,寄生于禾本科植物;单轴霉属约20种,中国有11种;假霜霉属约7种,中国有4种;霜霉属约75种,中国有50种;盘梗霉属约20种,中国有10种;拟盘梗霉属约5种,中国有3种。
