    岛弧靠大陆一侧的海盆地。又称边缘盆地。水深2000~5000米。与海沟岛弧组成沟弧盆系。弧后盆地在世界许多大洋边缘均有分布,以西太平洋边缘的最为典型。
   按地质和地球物理特征,可将弧后盆地分为4种成因类型。①边缘海盆地及弧间盆地。由于弧后微型扩张,一个火山岛弧与大陆分裂,形成以洋壳为底的海盆,称为边缘海盆地;一个火山岛弧经向分为两个火山弧,中间的洋壳盆地称为弧间盆地。前者以日本海和太和盆地为代表,后者以西南太平洋汤加-克马德克岛弧后的海盆为代表。②前陆盆地。在大陆型地壳上,属于陆缘延伸部分,具挤压特征的弧后盆地。以台湾海峡为代表。前陆盆地常有油气生成和储集。③弧后转换断层盆地。弧后沿转换断层走向水平运动形成的盆地。其形成与弧后剪切作用有关,以北美加利福尼亚湾为代表,其中以浊流沉积和浅海相沉积为特征,发育有3种类型地壳,即大陆型、过渡型和大洋型地壳。④弧后硅铝层上裂陷盆地。由于弧后大陆岩石圈下的地幔物质上拱和弧后微型扩张作用而形成的拉张型盆地。以中国东部弧后盆地为代表。这些盆地以具有陆壳结构和高热流为特征,往往以生长断层为边界,相间发育地堑成箕状构造和地垒。
