(人名)马祖号也。六祖慧能有二大弟子:一为青原之行思,二为南岳之怀让。青原之法嗣有湖南,南岳之弟子有江西,禅法之盛,始于此二师云。江西名道一,以姓马氏而称为马祖,以振道于江西而号为江西。唐开元中习禅于衡岳让和尚,而得其心印。始自建阳之佛迹岭迁至临川,次至南康龚公山。大历中隶名于钟陵开元寺,四方学者云集。贞元四年寂。元和中谥大寂禅师。见传灯录六。
