（人名）马祖号也。六祖慧能有二大弟子：一为青原之行思，二为南岳之怀让。青原之法嗣有湖南，南岳之弟子有江西，禅法之盛，始于此二师云。江西名道一，以姓马氏而称为马祖，以振道于江西而号为江西。唐开元中习禅于衡岳让和尚，而得其心印。始自建阳之佛迹岭迁至临川，次至南康龚公山。大历中隶名于钟陵开元寺，四方学者云集。贞元四年寂。元和中谥大寂禅师。见传灯录六。
