亦名清水潭，位于台湾本岛浊水溪左岸支流清水溪上源阿里山溪草岭一带谷中，地当嘉义县东北与云林县界上。1941年12月17日因台湾岛西南部强烈地震，草岭谷坡土沙崩落达1.5亿立方米，堵塞小流，形成长达6～7公里、宽约770米、最大水深超过100米的堰塞湖,被名草岭潭。1951年5月18日壅塞堤溃决,潭水消失。阿里山溪上游为阿里山森林风景区，塔山峰群之北有蛟龙瀑布，为台湾著名瀑布之一，水源标高约1600米,自顶至底,共分4层，水帘高悬，或合或分,奔腾下注，蔚为大观。附近有观音峰、仙棋盘、石梦谷、仙人洞等，合称太和风景区。在草岭旧潭址东南有太和山庄、社后坪、来吉社等。公路经太和村，西通嘉义梅山乡，南通奋起湖。
