兴安中学创办于1931年，已有70年光辉历程，学校地处旅游胜地，桂林市北部兴安县城内城台岭上，北临“与长城同为世界之奇观”的古灵渠，南毗广西休闲度假第一村——桂林乐满地，占地面积180亩，建筑面积35672平方米。现有初、高中共28个教学班，学生1938人，教职工104人，专职教师85人，其中特级教师1人，高级教师40人；教师文凭达标率百分之百，其中在读研究生3人。
1993区教委把兴安中学 确定为首批建好的区级示范学校 ，1998年6月顺利通过自治区检查组的考评，成为“全区中小学示范学校建设装备达标学校”继而又被确定为全区“现代教育技术实验学校”“科技教育示范学校”和“计算机网络建设实验学校”。
现代教育技术装备为学校的教育、教学和教研提供了优越的备件，学校高考升学率居全区前茅，并一年一个新台阶，2000年、2001年达93%。先后有4人次获全区高考状元，2001年全校文、理科总分800分以上的7人，单科800分以上的20人，被清华、北大等重点大学录取的同学70多人，取得了办学以来大面积的丰收。恢复高考以来，学校仅向全国重点高校就输送了680多名新生，高考科目平均名分列全区前十名的有31科次。学校共有25人荣获全国竞赛奖，105人次获区级奖，264人次获地市奖，有8班获区级先进集体、优秀团支部。1994年以来参加地市15所重点中学篮球赛六届，夺得两届第一、两届第二。先后荣获广西教委（教育厅）、体委、科协、共青团中央组织部、教育工会广西委员会等政府机关授予“文明学校”、“德育教育先进学校”、“中小学示范学校建设装备达标学校”、“贯彻体育卫生工作两个《条例》优秀学校”、“科技教育示范学校”、“全国五四红旗团委创建单位”、“民主管理学校先进单位”等十多个荣誉称号。
