利用各种技术减弱雷达反射波、红外辐射等特征信息，使敌方探测系统不易发现的飞机。"隐身"仅是一种借喻，并非指飞机在肉眼视距内不能被看到。飞机的特征信息，还包括声波和可见光。军用飞机采用"隐身"技术，是专门对付敌方雷达和红外传感器的，已有可能使它们对飞机探测的距离减少到二分之一左右，甚至更小一些。"隐身"飞机减小雷达有效探测距离的主要方法是：机身和机翼之间圆滑过渡（身翼融合），合理选择进气口的外形和位置,使机体表面各部分的连接处,尽可能避免直角相交；机体尽量采用非金属材料，飞机表面的金属部位涂以能吸收电磁波的材料。减小红外传感器探测距离的主要方法是：发动机采用二元喷管，喷口四周加隔热层或红外挡板，改变喷口方向；用冷空气降低喷气温度，以改变红外辐射峰值频率。20世纪60年代初,美国开始研究"隐身"技术,有的已用在U-2和SR-71高空侦察机上，但效果并不明显。70年代,美国的B-1轰炸机、F-16歼击机和法国"幻影"2000歼击机都采用了"隐身"技术。80年代研制的作战飞机，在设计阶段即充分考虑到"隐身"问题。
